Fair Foods, Exactly How Fattening Are They?

Whatever you enjoy most about the county fair, chances are that you enjoy sampling some of the food…even though we know that much of it is greasy, diet-breaking or otherwise bad for us.  However, since many fair foods, such as elephant ears or ‘Legion Burgers’ are things that we only indulge in once a year, we tend to let our guard down and give in to the temptation.

Whether you only attend the fair once each year or you’re so involved that you and your entire family lives at the fairgrounds for the duration of  fair week, you’ll probably be tempted to eat some foods that aren’t part of your normal diet.

Complete etiquette for family reunions
Complete etiquette for family reunions

It is time once again to brush up on “Family Reunion Etiquette”. Most everyone has attended or will attend a wonderful, fun-filled yearly event called a “family reunion”. This month I felt it important to address family reunion etiquette because a guide may be necessary for those who have never attended one and serve as a brush-up for those who have.

I love getting together with my relatives and seeing people that I haven’t seen all year but I found that if certain guidelines are applied the event goes smoother.

Jump Rope or The Way We Were
Jump Rope or The Way We Were

Every spring the children at our school participated in Jump Rope for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association.  The kids love it.  It is fun to watch the littlest ones trying and the bigger ones who can jump forever.   Usually after all the grades have competed in a jumping elimination, the teachers jump.  Then you find out that some body parts don’t work like they used to.

But don’t you remember when jumping rope at recess was just the greatest thing since sliced bread?  At our elementary school jump rope was one of the major sporting activities right after kick ball.  Oh we had lovely new outdoor basket ball courts but somehow they forgot to provide us with balls. So ‘us kids’ mostly used the courts for a giant skating rink after school.  Roller skating now there's a sport.

Where was this general store?

Where was this general store?

That’s just it.

This store, the Vivalia Store, moved (well, it was moved), from one Indiana county to another, from Parke County to Putnam County.

The Vivalia Store was the heart of Vivalia, Indiana, which was where the general store was located; that much we can be sure of.

AGE OLD LIES!
AGE OLD LIES!

A recent article in the local paper has made me question the overall fairness of the world we live in.

An 80-year-old man was fumbling through his drawers (which is a funny image, right there) and found a one dollar parking ticket that he had gotten 60 years ago and forgot to pay. Henry was apparently a man with an eye for a little publicity. He knew that someday he’d be 80 (with any kind of luck) and that if he conveniently misplaced the summons, he could pay it 60 years later when a buck was chicken feed—and he could maybe pick up a little positive press for seniors at the same time.

2006-2007 Fair Queen
Jordan Zaring Putnam County’s 2006-2007 Fair Queen

We had the great opportunity to talk to Jordan about her year being Fair Queen, and what a delight it was.  Talking to her about what stuck out during the fair, her appearances at the bingo tent, being introduced at the Rodeo with everyone and let’s not forget “Bossy Bingo” She’s excited about handing down the crown to the new Putnam County Fair Queen. When last years Queen (Tabitha Clifford, Jordan’s cousin) past down the crown it was emotional and exciting.  Watching Jordan right now she’s still glowing just thinking and talking about her experiences.
